This week’s episode of The GAR! Podcast is a long one, the incredible fourth of five episodes recorded live at the 2017 Camden Comic Con. First Glenn and friend of the show, the amazing Robert Repici, discuss the panels of the Con, including the one that they and Ray moderated later in the afternoon. They also discuss the guests of the panel- Amy Chu, Fred Van Lente, Dean Haspiel, and Larry Hama- the legendary silent issue of G.I. Joe, the Hydra Captain America, diversity in comics, the Justice Society, the Fox, and the art of storytelling.
Next, in a special French Fry Diary segment, the GAR! con crew (Jennifer Walker of The Make Mine Magic Podcast, friends of the show Jeff Milliman and Jessy Lukens, and the returning Ray) try some of the fries from the food trucks assembled by the Camden Comic Con, even the kimchi ones, which Glenn rightfully refuses to try. There’s also more discussion of energy drinks, and anti-vaxers. Thanks to Stink Fisher of The Pop Shop for the awesome burger.
Then we finally meet the mythical David Lisa, the geekiest librarian in New Jersey, and the equally cool Janel Miller of the South Jersey Writers’ Group, and we talk about the Echelon Mall, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, computers, injectable contraceptives, old school phones, libraries, first movies, drive-in theaters, the etymology of dork, graphic novels, and of course, Fantastic Four. David recently re-read the first one hundred issues of the classic series, which made for an intriguing starting point for the discussion of the characters and the creators, favorite stories, the lost FF adventure, the Silver Surfer, reprints, Bullpen Bulletins, comic book movies, Avenger X, March, and the legacy and tragedy of Jack Kirby.
The GAR! Podcast is the Glenn Walker and Ray Cornwall weekly podcast where they talk unrehearsed about whatever happens to come to mind. It’s an audio-zine for your mind, a nerd exploration of a nerd world, coming to you from the suburbs of New Jersey and the sunny lakes of Florida via Skype.
